Martin and the men had almost reached a row of buildings next to the rail station when they ran out of cover. An open stretch of ground lay before them—ground surrounded by signs declaring it was a minefield. The only way forward was through the field. So Martin stood up and started walking. His men were right behind. At a steady walking pace it was sometimes possible to see where a mine had been put in a hole and covered over with earth. Martin and the men wanted to run. The Germans were throwing a lot of bullets their way. Each man was beginning to wonder whether it was better to be killed by lead or blown up by a mine.

Ten paces into the field, Martin heard a telltale click. He had depressed the detonating trigger of a Schützenmine. Lift his foot and the detonator would set off the mine. A canister loaded with 350 ball bearings would bounce three feet into the air ahead. The ball bearings would rip his guts open. As long as he stood still the mine was harmless. He gestured for the others to keep going. They slipped past and quickly gained the cover of the buildings.

Martin was calm. He could beat the mine. All he had to do was drop to the ground right beside it. The mine would bounce up above him and spray the ball bearings harmlessly in all directions. As Martin made his move, a bullet struck his helmet. The slug pierced the steel and spun round and round with such force inside the liner that it tore the helmet clear off his head. Luckily, the bullet also knocked Martin down. The mine exploded above him. Leaving the helmet behind, Martin fled. He joined his small group and led them warily into the streets of Bernières.
